Abstract. Purpose: To investigate the safety and efficacy of transarterial embolization in patients with hypervascular spinal metastases from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) before surgical resection.
Material and Methods: 13 patients with spinal metastases underwent angiography and preoperative transarterial embolization with spherical particles, coils and the liquid cohesive composition before surgical resection. The following parameters were evaluated: types of tumor, sex, time interval between embolization and surgery, the influence of these parameters on intraoperative blood loss, surgical content, safety for the patient.
Results: Average value of intraoperative blood loss 680.8 mL for RCCs. There have been no in-hospital mortality related with the intraoperative blood loss. All patients received standard supportive care, emergency blood transfusion was not performed.
Conclusion: Our results showed the efficiency of the preoperative embolization of patients with primary tumors (renal cell carcinoma) and with metastases in the spinal column. In the embolization group, intraoperative blood loss was correlated with type of tumor and type of surgical resection. Noted statistically significant dependence of intraoperative blood loss from time interval of the preoperative embolization to surgery. Preoperative embolization of spinal tumors is enough a safe procedure. Complete embolization of RCCs is lower intraoperative blood loss for patients with hypervascular spinal tumors.
Key words: spinal metastases, angiography, embolization, estimated blood loss, renal cell carcinoma (RCC)
