Abstract. In this paper we investigate the structure of hemoglobin (Hb) by UV and FTIR spectroscopy. Studied the electronic characteristics of the π- conjugated ( aromatic ) — heme prosthetic group ( UV spectroscopy ) and the content of secondary structure elements in the globin Hb. Heme and globin are linked by van der Waals forces. The shift of the absorption band of heme 417 ± 0,5 nm to shorter wavelengths by 8-10 nm for the peoples living in the Arctic at different latitudes (w) (Yamal, 64 and 70 ° N. ), compared with residents of the middle latitudes (Novosibirsk, 55 ° N), indicating an increase in structural ordering of heme as povyscheniya latitude of residence population. Study of the content of secondary structure elements using FTIR spectroscopy showed an increase in hemoglobin of ordering the inhabitants in extreme Arctic conditions with increasing latitude. Given these results we can conclude that the affinity of Hb for oxygen in Arctic residents is higher than the inhabitants of middle latitudes. The reason for changing the structure of Hb affinity for oxygen, and the inhabitants of the Arctic, in our opinion, is associated with heliophysical factors.

Key words: Arctic, the structure of hemoglobin, UV, FT-IR spectroscopy
