Abstract. The aim of the study was to elucidate the impact of the climate of the Republic of Karelia on the development and primary morbidity of multiple sclerosis (MS) with the help of the analysis of seasonal dynamics of hospital admissions of MS patients. The increase of monthly mean hospitalizations was determined in the period from September to March, while the decrease of those numbers was found in a period from April to August. The growth of MS primary morbidity was the characteristic of the second half of the year. The structure of MS primary morbidity was found to correspond with the general tendency of the prevalence of optical neuritis as well as sensual disorders in the onset of the disease. Thus, the modulating impact of environmental conditions of the Republic of Karelia, including photoperiodicity and low mean annual air temperature, on MS progression was documented.

Key words: multiple sclerosis, morbidity, seasonality
