Abstract. The lowering of cognitive functions in patients with atherosclerotic encephalopathy is associated with disturbance of circadian and other rhythms of vegetative status. In the majority of patients persistent sympathicotonia is considered as a compensatory adaptive response with sufficient reserves of autoregulation. Decrease of sympathicotonia by special breathing exercises does not improve cognitive functions. Biocontrolled percutaneous laser therapy in the area of internal carotid and vertebral arteries and in the projection of frontal and temporal lobes as well normalizes parameters of biological rhythms and improves cognitive functions.

Key words: biorhythms, vegetative status, sympathicotonia, vagotonia, heart rate variability, cognitive functions, atherosclerosis, laser therapy, encephalopathy
