Abstract. Lens posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is one of the main reasons that can impair visual function after extracapsular cataract extraction. Blurred posterior capsule is diagnosed in 4.5–40% of cases, it tends to increase with time elapsed after surgery, and practically every fourth or fifth patient requires laser disruption to restore visual function. The aim of the following study is a dynamic evaluation of visual functions after YAG laser disruption of lens PCO. The study was performed on the basis of USMU ophthalmology clinic. During 2012– 2015 years, we have conducted 223 lens PCO laser disruptions.
Checking BCVA after disruption, after 5 minutes of treatment (with a diaphragm diameter of 3 mm.), 10 days and 3 months later. Analysis of BCVA at baseline and immediately after laser disruption showed that 83.9% of eyes BCVA before YAG lens PCO disruption was 0.01–0.6, and only 16.1% — BCVA values were in the range of 0.7-1.0. The postoperative visual acuity in the range of 0.01–0.6 was fixed at 38.6% of the eyes, and high visual acuity (0.7 and above) to 61.4%.
In most cases, the maximum visual acuity of the patient was achieved within 5 minutes after the operation, by the deadline of 10 days — still improved in 7% of patients, due to the settling of the capsule dissected fragments of the optical zone. Changes in the duration of three months are insignificant compared to the ten-day period.
After lens PCO disruption BCVA improved in all patients, with the same sense of the shroud disappeared, reduced glare. The worst functional results of laser treatment was achieved under such intraocular comorbidities as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.
