Abstract.

Osteoarthritis is common disease and is associated with higher incidence of comorbidity. It has been hypothesized that recently described subtype of diabetes-associated OA is characterized by increased prevalence of atherosclerosis risk factors. In this study we assessed atherosclerosis biomarkers in patients with OA preceded by diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM 2). Seventy eight patients with generalized OA were included in the study, 52 patients had OA preceded by DM and 26 patients served as control group. It was shown that patients with DM-associated OA had higher prevalence of risk factors common to both OA and DM 2: age, higher BMI, dyslipidemia, and changed pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine balance. These findings provide a rationale for the search of new therapeutic targets directed at simultaneous modulation of inflammation and several metabolic pathways (carbohydrate, lipid, protein, etc) in this group of patients.
