Abstract. The purpose of the study was to assess the possibility of using and the diagnostic significance of stool culture and the gas-liquid chromatography method for detecting short-chain fatty acids in feces when studying the intestinal microbiota in children of the first year of life. Materials and methods. A parallel culture test and the determination of short-chain fatty acids by the gas-liquid chromatography method in feces in children under one year were made: conditionally healthy (n=121) and resected intestinal resection (n=47). Results. In conditionally healthy children, the level of acetic acid, reflecting the activity of aerobic and facultative anaerobic microorganisms, is lower than in children with intestinal resection. Conversely, the level of propionic and butyric acids, showing the activity of anaerobes, is higher. Anaerobic index in conditionally healthy children is shifted to more negative values, which also indicates a greater activity of anaerobic microorganisms. This observation is confirmed by culture. In children who underwent intestinal resection, in comparison with conditionally healthy, higher levels of facultative-anaerobic conditionally pathogenic flora, in particular the Enterobacteriaceae group (E. coli lactose-negative and hemolytic, Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., Citrobacter spp.) and group Morganellaceae (Proteus spp.), as well as Staphylococcus aureus, with a lower content of anaerobes. Conclusion. The combination of culture research, to exclude infectious pathology, and the study of the metabolic activity of microorganisms based on the determination of short-chain fatty acids by gas-liquid chromatographic analysis will yield a comprehensive laboratory report on the state of the intestinal microbiota in children up to a year.
