Scientific activities
V.A. Chereshnev is the founder of a number of new research directions in the fields of experimental and clinical immunology, immunophysiology and immunopathophysiology. His key research areas are ecology and immunity, immunophysiology, immune mechanisms of inflammation, stress, cardiovascular disease, cancer, eye diseases, and AIDS.
Chereshnev spearheaded research works aimed at establishing the basic patterns andregulatory mechanisms, which may lead to homeostatic imbalance under stressful environmental conditions. In the context of the developed theory of immune system adaptation to extreme factors, he presented a wide spectrum of original scientific concepts and fundamental-theoretical assumptions, based on which a number of innovative technologies have been applied in practical medicine.
Chereshnev formulated a fundamentally new rationale for systemic inflammation as a model of pathological processes and their clinical manifestation — systemic inflammatory response syndrome. He offered the hypothesis of activation of innate maternal immunity as a compensatory response to immunosuppression during pregnancy. He proposed the immunopathophysiological theory, which associated pathogenesis of a number of somatic diseases with the evolutionarily interdependent chain of “microorganisms–bacteria–viruses”. Having studied the properties of alpha-fetoprotein, he identified the previously unknown ability of this glycoprotein to suppress proliferation of different types of cells induced by the pathological process, and to initiate their inclusion in the process ofprogrammed cell death, i.e., apoptosis. He formulated the term “immunorehablitology”, which is now accepted in scientific circles.
He was one of the organizers of regular international conferences «Ecology and Immunity» (1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1998), and «Microbial Diversity» (1996).
Doctor of Medicine (1984), Professor (1991), Full member (Academician) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Full member (Academician) of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Member of the Joint Scientific Council on Biological Sciences, Member of the Executive Board of the Russian Society of Immunologists, Mmember of the Executive Board of the Commonwealth of Independent States Society of Allergology and Immunology (CIS Society), Member of the Ural Committee for Global Security, Member of the Expert Council of the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles, member of the editorial boards of several journals, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Ural State University named after A. M. Gorky.
V.A. Chereshnev provided structured support, advice, training and guidance to 26 candidates and 43 doctors of science. He wrote chapters for two textbooks for universities, three manuals dedicated to study of combined radiation injuries, and 8 textbooks.
V.A. Chereshnev is the author of two registered scientific discoveries (# 189 — «Changes in the immunological and functional state of the human body and biological life of human population», 2002; # 245 — "The property of alpha-fetoprotein to suppress the proliferation of different cell types and to trigger cell death in humans and animals”, 2004).
