Abstract.
Although diabetes is a strong risk factor for coronary heart disease, the association between glycemia within the “normal range” and coronary heart disease has been somewhat controversial. Forty one patients with well compensation of Type 2 diabetes and twenty health subjects from the endocrinology clinic at city hospital #40 were recruited for a study. Using a standard commercial ultrasound machine with a 2,5-MHz phased array probe, we acquired three apical views in grey scale. Type 2 diabetes melitus was associated with a significantly higher prevalence of LVH and left atrial enlargement compared with control. Thereto all patients with Type 2 diabetes showed greater cardiovascular risk then in control (p<0.01).
Conclusion: In patients with Type 2 diabetes the cardiovascular risk and the risk of diabetic cardiomyopathy was strongly associated with previous hyperglycemia.
Key words:
type 2 diabetes mellitus, glycosilated hemoglobin, cardiovascular risk.
