Abstract. Objective. To develop a new, more reliable clinical method of knee joint research for choosing effective treatment techniques. Materials and methods. The research included 2266 people (29% — rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 62% — osteoarthrosis (OA), 9% — healthy), aged between 19 and 75 years. The optical density of the knee joints was evaluated using the device and method developed by Z.M. Seagal. During the study, the optical density was determined in patients with pathology of the knee joint. The pulse-photometry was carried out by applying the optocoupler to the zone of interest, while the patients were holding their breath. Statistical processing of data was carried out using the Microsoft Excel 2010 software package. The estimation of the differences between the samples was carried out using the Student's t-test. Results. The optical density of the knee joints in health patients and patient with rheumatoid arthritis and ostearthrosis was determined. With RA, the optical density was 2.7 times less than normal. In the cases of RA with an increased volume of synovial fluid (55.81 ml and above) the optical density in the suprapatellar bursa of the knee was 0.56 and below. The development of this method of differential diagnosis can also be used to identify specific signs of pathology; to evaluate the effectiveness of various drugs, the ways of their administration and optimal doses; and to develop new treatment techniques. As a result, the normal indices for the optical density of the knee joint were determined. Specific symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthrosis were detected by the optical density measurements. These results are of practical importance for differential diagnostics and the development of new effective methods for treating typical knee joint pathologies. The method proposed by Z.M. Seagal, makes it possible to improve differentiation between RA and OA and due to early adequate diagnosis to provide effective treatment, reducing potentially avoidable complications.
