Abstract.
There were determined by gas-liquid chromatography serum monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in apparently healthy residents of Subpolar (SR) and Polar (PR) regions in different age groups. The levels of cis-oleic (C18: 1n9s) and palmitoleic (C16: 1c) acids in the blood were shifted towards lower values and the level of trans-oleic (C18: 1n9t) acid — towards high values in residents of the two regions regardless of age, particularly in age groups: 16–21, 22–35 and 36–45 years. In this case, the content of erucic acid (C22: 1) were shifted to the upper limit of normal in those two regions in all age groups, and in the age groups — 46–60 years and 61–74 years its content is beyond the norm in 11% and 39 % of residents from SR and in 22% and 34% of residents from PR. Identified age-related peculiarities of MUFA can increase free radical activity, which may be one of the risk predictors of the cardiovascular disease, changes in insulin resistance and delayed reproductive maturity in northerners.
