Abstract.

Purpose. To assess the relationship between outcomes
of early carotid surgery and wait after ischemic stroke. Methods. We
retrospectively analysed data from 297 patients undergoing carotid
reconstruction in different time after ischemic stroke. We investigated
the time interval between ischemic stroke and carotid reconstruction
in relation to the surgical results and complications. Result. Carotid
reconstruction was performed within 4 weeks in 87 (29,3 %) patients; 4
weeks or more in 210 (70,7 %). Perioperative complications (any other
stroke or deaths from stroke) among patients treated within 4 weeks
were 5,7 % and were comparable to those who treated after 4 weeks –
6,2 %. However, 36,7 % of the patients awaiting operation 4 weeks or
more experienced a new ischemic stroke, most of them occurred in the
3rd or 4th week after the initial event. Conclusion. Our data indicates
that carotid reconstruction can be performed with a comparable risk
within a short delay (within 4 weeks) after ischemic stroke. In addition
severe cerebrovascular events occurring within the waiting period of
surgery may be avoided.
