Abstract. Purpose. This literature review considers the issue of association of cognitive and affective disorders with generalized and focal types of epilepsy. Methods. References were taken from Russian and foreign databases for the period from 2010–2017. Only full-text publications (in the number of 37) were included in this review. Results. Our research revealed the wide prevalence of concomitant cognitive impairments, which significantly increase the underlying disease process and manifest as memory impairment, attention-deficit, decreased intelligence, etc. These disorders occur with a high frequency in both frontal lobe and temporal lobe epilepsies. Many researchers agree that there is no statistically significant difference in the cognitive functions impairments between groups of patients with temporal and frontal epilepsies, which is explained by short associative connections between the cortex of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Despite the fact that in the references there are data on the more rare prevalence of cognitive impairments in idiopathic epilepsy, the authors have described these impairments in this group of patients as well. Concomitant anxiety and depressive disorders are important as well, and together with cognitive impairments can lead to social stigmatization of the patient. Discussion. Consequently, there is a need to develop and implement new methods of diagnosis and correction.
